In our lives, throughout higher education and beyond, we come across instances where reports, assignments etc. are needed to be submitted. In these cases, referencing plays an important role in these documents as it supports the credibility and the authenticity of the work you submit.

Referencing means writing the full details of the source that you use to gather information in your research. These information includes name of the author, name of the publication, page number, volume number, year of publication etc. The main purpose of referencing is to avoid plagiarism and acknowledge the original author, as well as to give the correct path in an instance where someone needs to read the original source. Referencing can be done using methods such as writing in your own words, using quotation marks, adding citations etc. The difference between citation and reference is that citation gives only limited amount of information about your source and is written at the end of the line/paragraph that you had quoted, while reference in written at the end of the document and includes a detailed description of the original source.

We, according to the Staffordshire University conventions, use Harvard Referencing method which is a widely popular and an easier way of doing referencing. Other referencing conventions include OSCOLA, APA, MLA and British Standard Numeric.
